THREE BOOK GIVE AWAY for the New Year
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
Well, I managed to stay awake until the crystal ball at NYC Time Square dropped at Midnight 12/31/12. Usually I work, but this time I wasn't working as I am officially semi-retired. That's right! I put in my notice to leave Mt. Carmel Health after 29 years and 5 months. I've seen so many changes at Mt. Carmel West and St. Ann's, but the biggest change was my decision to leave. When I called Human Resources to find out about my pension, they recommended that I take early retirement. So I followed their suggestion and decided to go ahead and retire. So as of today, this is my third day of retirement and what did I do? Well, I beaded, naturally. My retirement is short though as next Monday the 7th, I'll be reporting to Nationwide Children's Hospital to work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Core lab. I'm excited, happy, and ready for a new phase of my life.
So I decided to celebrate the New Year and my RETIREMENT even though it is short, I'm going to do a give away with three wonderful Lark Jewelry and Beading books for you my friends. I decided to end the give away on January 6th which will in actuality be my last day of retirement. The give away is only for anyone as I'll be willing to ship internationally this time around. Buzzing brain
I tell you but my brain is buzzing with ideas all the time. Who gave my Muse an espresso??? Oh wait, that was probably me. But every where I see things that inspire me and give me more ideas. I don't know what I want now...more hours in the day..or more hands to do multiple jobs at the same time. I found a new artist making the most incredible pendents over on Facebook's Bead Soup Party Cafe. Her name is Marti Conrad. She posted pictures of a few of her fish pieces she'd been working on. I caught one look at the pink/black/blue pendent and knew I must have it. So I bought it along with a another one and definitely was so pleased when I opened the package and got it out. I was right in the middle of finishing Fern Goddess at the time, so I could not wait to start. I can't find any of my starting photos, but yesterday I did a three hour marathon and got quiet a bit done.
Usually I have such a hard time naming pieces, but this one came easy. Six years ago, I had to go to Miami for training on the Coulter Hematology machine. We got the royal treatment every night. One evening a group of us went to South Beach for dinner and party. After dinner, and before I was to met the group at a club we'd decided on, I wanted to walk along the beach getting my feet wet in the Atlantic Ocean. It was dusk, and the beach wasn't crowded at all. It was lovely to be out with bare feet in the sand during March! I turned to look back at land side where all the lights from the restaurants and clubs were on. The colors of the neon and the buildings always stuck with me. And looking down at the pendent from Marti made me fly back to that moment on the beach were the lights were reflected in the pounding waves. Instantly, I knew this was to be called South Beach Reflections. Along with the pendent from Marti, I'm using rhinestones I got from Liz. Some of them are squarish so I'm having to rethink how to "cage" them in. So far, I'm pretty happy with this project.
Something else happened today that I'd like to mention. If you've been following my blog, then you are aware that my youngest Scottie, Arwen, was diagnosed with bladder cancer back in October. Usually the prognosis for canines with this type of cancer is 0-120 days. Yes, that is correct...days! When we got the news, we both were devastated. I went to Facebook and made a comment. Instant one of my old Scottie friends private me telling me that her dog Sydney has had it for almost three years and had survived that long due to preventative therapy medications. Anne sent me a list of drugs to ask my Vet about. During this time, whenever I've felt low or think that these are Arwen's last days, I write to Anne. She is always been there. She has given me the strength to go on with her encouragement and knowledge. I don't know what I've done without her during this time. This afternoon when I signed on to Facebook, I saw that Anne had had to take Sydney for her last Vet trip. Sydney the brave twelve year old girl has gone to be with all those other pets taken from our hearts too soon. I went downstairs and hugged my baby girl so tight. Then came back and messaged Anne to thank her for being there for me. And in my heart, I was so hoping that even my few words could help her handle this loss and grief.
I know in a previous post about the Showcase 500 Beaded Jewelry book, I mentioned the words that Ray wrote about the community of beaders sharing lives with each other. There are so many more communities out there that help and support each other night/day 24/7. Some of my Scottie friends are people I've know online for over 20 years when I first brought FalaPink home to our new home 23 years ago. Some I met online the next year on an Internet group called Scotti_L back when you subscribed to Internet message boards. Then the Internet was born, and we all moved to groups such as CyberScots and Yahoo Groups. We've found each other on Facebook, and though we've never met in person there are these Scottie friends who are always there for me as I am for them. We are a community. We are a family. Sharing the laughs and the tears. For Anne and Sydney...here are big hugs for you.

Give Away and Review of Jewelry books
Once again, I would like to thank the people at Lark Craft Books and Sterling Publishing for giving me the chance to review some of their wonderful books. The two books that I am reviewing today along with the give away are all professional jeweler books. When I first got the one book to review and the other for a give way for my blog readers, I was a little taken aback as they both were far out of my realm of comfort. Neither one seemed to interest me at the time, but then I sat down with the first book by Carles Codina, Color, Texture & Casting for Jewelers: Hands-on Demonstrations and Practical Applications and was immersed in the book. Never again when I see metal jewelry for sell will I question the prices on each piece. I had no idea the complexity of the design and craft man ship involved in any precious metal jewelry.
Carles Codina i Armengoi in his introduction states that "to understand jewelry making, it is not adequate to know it on a theoretical level". These theoretical levels are based on the knowledge of Mathematics, physics, and chemistry some based thousands of years ago by Phoenicians, Romans, and Greeks. In this modern age, it is still a requirement of any jewelry to know the techniques of "granulation, keum boo, and mokume gane" which allows the artist to "come into direct contact with the material and fully appreciate its construction requirements". Once these are learned and practice on the workbench, does the artist "use ancient processes to develop a current design and be inspired by contemporary artist who are doing the same". With many photos and understandable language for someone like myself who has no instruction in the jewelers' world, I was able to understand and fully appreciate the steps taken to produce outstanding jewelry using these long used techniques. The logic of the chemistry and physics involved in manipulating metals into jewelry from granulation techniques to molding is a fascinating read for anyone who wants to see "behind the curtain" when you step into an Artist booth and cast your eyes on the simple or intricate design. You like myself will learn to appreciate the work involve in the creation.
After reading the above book, I turned to another book on Master Jewelers. The book, The Penland Book of Jewelry: Master Classes in Jewelry Techniques, took me one step farther into the mind and techniques of jewelry creation. The Penland School of Crafts is in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and is the haven for many students and teachers. The in depth classes train the students in techniques such as those described in the above book, but goes further into developing new directions for the Artist teaching and the Students learning. The editor Marthae Le Van writes that the offerings at the Penland School of Craft "in metal work are even more diverse, and including raising, holloware, and small sculpture, along with alternative materials, anodizing, die forming, lost wax casting, mechanism, jewelry design, and concept oriented classes". She has ten diverse artist to write an essay, provide a hands-on demonstration of a technique along with many photos of their creations and each chapter ending with a gallery of other artist work that has meaning to them. The turn of each page greets the reader with information and beautiful work that literally can take your breath away. The artist highlighted in this book include Marilyn Da Silva, John Cogswell, Jaime Pelissier, Rob Jackson, Heather White van Stolk, Jan Baum, Tom McCarthy, Maria Phillips, Mary Ann Scherr, and Douglas Harling. All are unique and all are amazing Artist. I really enjoyed reading this book learning each Artist discovery and motivation that has lead them along the road to achievement and teaching.
I learned so much from these two books and would like to pass along this chance to explore and learn the history, the techniques, and the future direction of Jewelry Artist. I am giving away to one person both of these two amazing books. You should see these two books as gateways to answers about the past, the techniques, and the future direction of jewelry making. I recommend that the one winner read the books in the order I have to fully appreciate them. Start with Color, Texture & Casting for Jewelers for the basic information, then read The Penland Book of Jewelry to see the result of practice of these skills and then taking them beyond to another dimensions.

Day 7 of vacation and winners

Day seven of my vacation started out with our sleeping in which a rarity around here with Fiona wanting to eat around 6 AM every morning. It was lovely, but we really only slept an extra hour. After having a nice breakfast, we picked up the threesome from the Vet and were they ever happy to see us. Fiona about broke her tail when she felt my hand on her head. Frodo and Arwen were happy but they didn't have time for greetings as they wanted "out of here!". It didn't take them long to investigate the whole house, drink two bowls of water and then crash out in their favorite sleeping places.
I spent the early part of the morning playing with new molds I had gotten in the mail. This time my experiment was adding Pearl-X powder to the actual resin before it would set up. It did color the resin, but only a faint tint. I also got two more ice cube tray molds to play with. Today the molds were little fish and the cutest dinosaurs you've ever seen.
My friend Cyndy Sieving who is the most busy woman in the world since she is deep in her Artistic Figures in Cloth and Clay preparation for next year. If you want to met THE QUEEN of organization then you must met Cyndy. She singularly picks the teachers, organizes the schedule, works on the website (with help from Mike), contacts students, takes all the orders for classes, deals with the hotel, send notifications to all the students and teachers, and organizes all the events including a wonderful closing event that I think will make everyone happy. On top of all that, she works full time, helps out with the Guilded Lilies along with being in the Winter Fair committee/Ohio State Fair committee/High Road Show committee, has a booth at the Columbus Christmas Fair, and I am sure there are dozens of other things she does. So between her busy schedule and my work schedule we rarely get time to get together. We were able to have a late lunch and do some junk shopping where I found some great things for Chris to use for his robots and a jumper to use in a future class of face painting through the Guild.
I decided to head out to Club Bead at 1 Stop Bead Shop in the evening. I hadn't been able to attend since the Winter. It was so fun to walk in and instantly find friends who made a place for me to sit and bead. We all got caught up on what was happening in our lives that we don't want to talk about on Facebook. Every single one of us does something different, but we all are together in our love of beads. I brought my turtle stand for the Synergy project. Many people walking by our table while shopping for Bead and Button treasure Lisa brought from Milwaukee, stopped to see my doll. I think I might have gotten some people actually interested in doing beaded dolls or animals for future classes. Lisa also told me that she wanted me to teach the Tila Window Pane class in the Fall. This is the class I had to cancel because of work conflicts. AND I am counting down the days until Marcia Decoster comes to Columbus. There are still spaces left for her two classes
Before I went to Club Bead, I had to stop by Dick Blick on Sawmill Road. I cannot tell you how great this store is. You walk in and get greeted no matter how busy the store is. And there has never been a time when someone does ask me what they can help me with. This time I had a young woman help me try to figure out how to color the molded plastic resin faces. She went online to find products but nothing really showed up. So she gave me a couple ideas. Have spray paint will make art! Maybe Sunday...maybe Sunday.

Summer Give Away
Officially it is still Spring here in Central Ohio. Last week the temperatures were in the 90s with ten dry days. Finally, the weather broke with a huge downpour and temperatures dropped down into the normal for this time of year. Still, that little bout of Summer weather and sitting in the air conditioning made me realize that there must be something a person can do when trapped inside because of the heat or allergies. Oh yes, I had that problem on top of everything else. Thank goodness the rain go rid of the pollen so I feel so much better. The "inside" time gave me the chance to work on some projects instead of working on the yard. I got to thinking that this would be the perfect time to pull out a book or a pattern and make something fun while waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate. Or maybe just a chance to relax and make something fast and wonderful.

The first book is a signed copy of Nathalie Mornu's "A Bounty of Bead +Wire Earrings: 50 fast, fun Jewelry Projects. Nathalie writes "You face is the first thing people notice. It only makes sense to call a little attention to it by wearing some pretty earrings". I agree totally. Inside are 50 projects with step by step instructions along with lots of pictures to guide you in completing these earrings and having the satisfaction of stating that you did it yourself.

One World One Heart And Winter enchantment
I wanted to share with you the give aways I received from the One World One Heart blog event last month that whirled us all around the world visiting other artists' blog & sharing a look into other lives. I found so many new blogs to follow from this event and am enjoying learning new techniques and getting to know other artist.
First off, I got this wonderful heart shape mini quilt from Monique. I wrote & told her that Daisy loves the quilt & won't let go of it since she saw it emerge from the package. Monique also sent me an adorable card, but Daisy squirreled that away & can't find it. Then I got this two Angelself.com. It was a cold wintry day here in Ohio when I shoveled my way out to the mailbox & two little pieces of Spring were there. They sit here so I can look at them instead of the gray gloom outside the window. Then another package came in smelling so wonderful, that Chris had to stand there when I opened it. There was a sampling of delicious soaps from Sweet Sally's Soaps. These are only a couple of the bars as the rest are in our bathrooms giving them enticingly wonderful scents. I don't know which is my favorite, yet.
Artbeads.com has also posted the entries for their Winter Enchantment Designs by bloggers. There are some great pieces here. Artbeads.com is one of my favorite places to shop on line...yours???
Chris & I have decided to become vendors at Artistic Figures in Cloth this coming April in Columbus Ohio. Chris has been working on some new pieces to be for sale. I also have been working on a few things.
I just found out that Treasures of the Gypsy are also going to be a vendor at AFIC. If you've never ever ever seen some of their fabrics & trims then you are just going to be blown away. They usually don't travel East of the Mississippi, so Cyndy must have really worked hard to get them to come to AFIC. Even if you are not into dolls you MUST come just to visit Treasure of the Gypsy's booth. When in Albuquerque, I saw people dropping thousands...not hundreds mind you, but thousands of dollars as there are fabrics and trims you won't find any place else. So mark the last weekend on your calender to see some fabulous dolls and do some outstanding shopping here in Columbus

One World One Heart
I stumbled across One World One Heart last year during the last week it and was so surprised to find some great blogs with wonderful give away. This is the Fifth Year for this event and unfortunately the last. I was just blown away by the great variety of artists and the generosity of their work they were willing to give away to other blogs. This global event started Midnight on January 20th and will run until February 17th. Take a few hours and come with me & stroll though the list of fantastic blogs. I promise you won't be disappointed.
I'm Dot Lewallen and started blogging when I joined the Bead Journal Project about 4 years ago. I mainly blog about my passion of beaded art dolls, but I have been known to write about my Scotties, doll making, work, life, BEADS, and all the wonderful connects I've made with my 20+ years on the internet.
For this event, I'm going to give away two of my Art dolls to two separate lucky winners. The first is a completed beaded dolls I made for BeadWorks magazine back when they were looking for pieces that had to do with Earth Mother. This doll was on their webpage. She has been loved enough and now it looking to find a new home.
My other give away is a Pocket Monster. I have a whole basket of them. They fight constantly with themselves & I promise the main instigator won't be the one I give away (fingers crossed behind my back! LOL!).

give aways & vacation
I just got this message from Ray over that Lark Crafts. Two fabulous give away items. One is a free download of the Helixa Necklace project from Sarah McConnell's One Big Beautiful Bead (I must download this now!) and then a chance to win one of the fabulous books that Lark makes (the non-Jewelry Lark Jewelry & Beading 500 series books, including the beaded objects, metal vessels, knives, glass beads, Judaica, enameled objects, and polymer clay entries in the 500 series). I love the Lark books. They are so well put together & the perfect books to go through when you are having a slump like me & need to jump kick the Muse. Which ones do I want? Well, of course the 500 beaded objects (can you believe I don't have that?) and I thought that metal vessel books look intriguing. The book giveaways are only for US residents & will be open until this coming Monday Oct. 4th. So hurry over to Lark Craft for a chance to get one of these books.
And Chris has been working on his thousands of pictures from Kauai vacation this month. This one is from the end of the road looking out North at the Napali Coast. And if you think real hard, yes you have seen this place before. Remember Jurassic Park??? Well that was filmed in Kauai & this is the place where the helicopters flew for the first glimpse of the island. Isn't it a beautiful place? While Chris was taking photos, I just sat & watched the clouds come up over the peaks and roll down into the valley. Then my attention was grabbed by the ferns and other plants growing around. This is truly a magical place. I'll post more once he sends them over to my computer. He is also working on taking these photos and making them into a book as a memento of our vacation. Costco will do this for a pretty reasonable price.
