I find it so quirky that some of us struggle with the word "artist". I do. I feel more like an "artisan" The majority of my dolls have been just like you, taking the original doll, and then adding flavor, my own twist to make it mine. My goal, with dolls this year, is to trust myself, and my "mistakes" PLUS there is NOTHING WRONG with loving technique.(it seems like sometimes I come from a place of lack...nope...that's when I channel TAWANDA!)
